Accidental Harm to Pets

It is surprising how easy it is to accidentally harm your pet…even when you have the best of intentions!  Here are some tips to help you care for your pet without harm:

• Don’t overfeed your pet as this causes obesity and numerous other complications.  It seems nice to give your pet some “leftovers” from the table as a treat but these leftovers may be unsuitable pet food and can also cause excessive weight gain when in addition to normal feeding.
• Don’t feed your pet incorrect foods such as excess fats causing pancreatitis;  onions or chocolate causing poisoning;  or incorrect mineral supplements causing bone growth problems (particularly in puppies or kittens).
• Don’t give human painkillers to pets unless specifically directed by a Veterinarian.  Overdosing of painkillers can cause immediate death or long time illness leading to death.
• Don’t assume that what is good for dogs is good for cats.  This is not always the case.  For example, Advantage is an excellent flea treatment for dogs and cats.  However Advantix, made by the same company and similarly packed, will kill fleas, ticks AND CATS - Advantix is a dog-specific medication.  So always read labels carefully and follow instructions exactly.

Let’s be careful not to harm or kill our pets with often well-meaning but dangerous deeds!
